The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have agreed to Settlements in the Île-à-la-Crosse School class action
SASKATOON, SK — February 12 — The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have agreed to Settlements in the Île-à-la-Crosse School class action. Compensation is not yet available.
The class action relates to harms experienced by Survivors at the Île-à-la-Crosse School and residence, which operated from approximately 1860 to 1975/76. Individuals who attended the Île-à-la-Crosse School, and who were alive as of December 9, 2003, may be eligible for compensation in recognition of the harms they experienced. If an eligible Survivor passed away on or after December 9, 2003, their estate or eligible heirs may be able to participate in the settlement.
The proposed settlements include $27.335 million for Experience Payments for Survivors and a $10 million Legacy Fund, and a further $40.2 million for abuse claims, legal fees, and potentially additional Experience Payments for Survivors who lived in residence.
“These proposed settlements represent an important step toward accountability and recognition of the harms experienced by Survivors and their families,” said Margaret Waddell, Class Counsel for the class action. “While no settlement can undo the damage caused to the Survivors and their families, this process is intended to provide meaningful compensation and support healing for those affected.”
The proposed settlements must be approved by the Court. A judge will review each settlement to determine whether it is fair and in the best interests of class members.
The Settlement Approval Hearing is scheduled to take place March 30–31, 2026, in Saskatoon, with options for class members and the public to attend in person or online.
To help class members and their families learn more, a series of townhall meetings will take place February 13–16, 2026. These sessions will be available in person (La Loche, Île-à-la-Crosse, Buffalo Narrows, and Saskatoon) and online. Recordings will be made available afterward.
