Île-à-la-Crosse School Settlement

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan have agreed to settlements in the Île-à-la-Crosse School class action.

The class action covers harms at the Île-à-la-Crosse School and residence, which operated from around 1860–1975/76.

If you attended the Île-à-la-Crosse School, you may be eligible for compensation.
If your relative attended the school and passed away on or after December 9, 2003, you may also be eligible through their estate or as an heir.

What happens next?

A hearing will take place at the Court of King’s Bench in Saskatoon from March 30-31, 2026, at 520 Spadina Cres E. You can attend in person or online.

A judge will review each settlement and the fee requests to determine whether they are fair and in the best interests of class members.

No compensation will be available unless the judge approves one or both settlements. You do not need to hire a lawyer to take part or to receive compensation.

Your options

1. Wait

If you support the settlements, you do not have to do anything right now. More information will be available after the hearing.

2. Object

If you don’t agree with the settlements or the requests for lawyers fees, or honoraria payments to the Representative Plaintiffs and Steering Committee members, you can send an objection. You can download an Objection Form or request one to be emailed by contacting the Administrator.

3. Watch the hearing

Survivors and family members may watch in person or online. They may also raise their objections about the  settlements,  legal fees, and honoraria  payments  directly to the judge in person or online. A link to join the hearing online will be shared one week before the hearing.

4. Opt out

If you do not want to receive compensation from the settlements and keep your right to sue Canada or Saskatchewan as an individual for harms experienced at the Île-à-la-Crosse School, you can opt out after the settlement approval process. You cannot opt out now. If the Court approves the settlement, information about how to opt out will be provided.
