Compensation

Learn about compensation available through the Île-à-la-Crosse School Settlement.

About compensation

If you are eligible, you may receive compensation from one or both of the following categories:

  • Experience (based on time at the school)
  • Abuse (based on harm experienced)

You choose whether to submit information under one or both of the categories.

Experience Payment

The amount of an Experience Payment is based on how long a Survivor attended the school.

Survivors may receive:

  • Up to $10,000 for attending the school for up to four years; OR
  • Up to $15,000 for attending the school for 5 or more school years
You do not need to describe any harm you experienced to be eligible for an Experience Payment.

Abuse Compensation

Additional compensation may be available if the Survivor experienced harm while attending the Île-à-la-Crosse School. Survivors may be eligible for up to $50,000–$235,000 in compensation, depending on the harm they experienced.

If you are only applying for an Experience Payment, you do not have to complete the Abuse Compensation section (Part 5) of the claim form.
If you are applying for Abuse Compensation, you must complete the Abuse Compensation section (Part 5) of the claim form before the deadline of June 1, 2028.

Choosing a harm level for abuse compensation

In Part 5, Step 2 of the claim form, you will be asked to indicate the level of harm for which you are claiming compensation by writing the level number (Level 2, 3, or 4) into a box on the form. If you are only applying for an Experience Payment and do not wish to apply for Abuse Compensation (Levels 1 to 4), please leave this section blank.

When filling in the form:

  • Answer all required questions
  • Select only one level of harm
  • Choose the highest level that applies to you

If you are unsure how to complete this section of the claim form, contact the Administrator or Class Counsel for support. Do not leave this section blank if you are applying for Abuse Compensation. The Administrator will not be able to process your application for Abuse Compensation if this section is blank.

Describing your experience

In your claim form, you will be asked to describe what happened to you. This information is required so that the Administrator can assess your eligibility to receive Abuse Compensation. It is okay if you don’t remember every detail, but you should provide as much information as you are able, to help the Administrator make their decision.
